踏雪上学去 Winter Mornings

[mp3]

Our house was not insulated and the cold winter wind blew down the valley and frosted our windows, forming beautiful ice patterns that looked like crystal when the morning sun shone through. When I stood close to the window, I could feel the cold air from the outside and I was thankful that we at least had some protection from the frigid winters. The only warm place in our house was directly over the coal furnace in the basement. There was no heat in the bedrooms upstairs and, every morning, we three girls would run down the stairs and gather around the one warm spot to change from our nightgowns into school clothes.

Our mother made oatmeal in a kettle the old-fashioned way. There weren't any packets of instant oatmeal to pop in the microwave in those days. A microwave would become a necessity in every kitchen many years later. That breakfast of hot oatmeal filled our tummies and would last all morning. We grabbed the lunch boxes that our mother had prepared with a sandwich, an apple or a cookie, and then we went out into the cold weather. We didn't like to wear the heavy snowsuits but were very glad for the warmth, as we had to walk nearly a mile to the one-room schoolhouse. It didn't matter come rain or shine, snow or sleet - none of us owned an umbrella to protect us - we just put one foot in front of the other and trudged through the snow until we reached the schoolhouse. Once inside we hung our coats near the coal furnace to dry while we studied our lessons.

Do you have a warm house? Did you have to walk a long distance to school?
