Hello, my name is Auntie Arlene. I will share with you different stories from my life. Some of them are quite amazing. My life has been rich with adventures. I have traveled this road for a very long time. It all began in a little house in the countryside. But the path has taken me to far away places. Will you join me on this journey? You will learn a lot about other people and places around this world. Are you ready? It will be a fun trip. So let's get started. [mp3]

谷仓 The Barn

[mp3]

The wagon full of hay was in the barn, and it had to be unloaded into the bins on either side of the main floor. High in the ceiling of the barn hung a large black hayfork. It was attached to a heavy rope and tied to a pole where we stood. I was always afraid that someone might accidentally loosen the rope and the fork would fall on us. I never walked under it. Grandpa would carefully lower the fork and it would clamp onto a bunch of hay. And then he guided it into the bins. Then he called on us to start stomping once again and that's when the fun began. We took turns swinging on a big rope that hung over the bins and jumping into the hayloft. Country kids have more fun than city kids.

When it came time to harvest the wheat, it was brought into the barn just like the hay. Grandpa Jim rented a threshing machine and for many days we heard a loud banging noise as the wide rubber belts attached to a gasoline engine operated the machine. It was a very dusty, noisy, long process to thresh the wheat kernels from the straw. The grain was stored in large barrels; it would be sent to the mill to be made into flour for Grandma's bread and cookies. The straw was used as bedding in the cow's stall. We all referred to the threshing machine as "old pipes" and were glad when the noise stopped and there was peace in the valley once more.

Three apple trees grew on the farm and they were the first to ripen. One hot day we kids made apple sauce and overnight the jars exploded. What a mess that was!
