As Well & As Well As
Q Mr John Doe,
"as well" & "as well as" make me confused. Would you show me some examples so that I can understand them? Would you prefer to talk about them in English Easy Program?
A Hi, Wuwu,
"As well as" is usually used with a noun after it, while "as well" does not.

e.g.
1. Your friend is coming. You should come as well. (Here "as well" means "also".)
2. Jane as coming, as well as Joe.

How?
Q 您好!John老师,我非常想提高自己的英语水平,但总觉得学习方法不得当。以前学的单词也忘光了,语法更是记不得了。请问老师我现在的水平该如何学习英语,是先背单词还是边学句形边背单词。谢谢!
A Hi,小慢,
Except for those who are just starting to learn English who need to learn some basic words (like apple, boy, girl, me, you, etc.), I believe it is best to do all at the same time. So you need to practice reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

It is much easier to learn from storybooks and other reading material. I would suggest that you read them aloud because hearing it helps you to absorb better.

Study Habits
Q Dear Mr john doe:
How to imprive my study habits in enhancing my english ability?
A Hi, Hsuan,
Good question! It has to do with time management and regularity. You should set up a schedule for yourself so that you have time set aside to study English. It should be at least once a week. If you want to make faster progress, make it 3 times a week. Have a notebook that you use only for studying English. Record in there the English words and phrases that you are learning - be sure to include the whole sentence so that you know how it is used. Then review them during the time you have set aside to study English.

If you are studying three times a week, then you will have time to review, read new material, and write.

A Confusing Sentence
Q Sir,
"Practice listening as you read the text being read." I only understand "Practice listening as you read the text. When you added "being read", I become confused. "What does it mean "the text being read"?
A Hi,Wanqing,
Sorry, my sentence was a confusing one. The "being read" was referring to the text that was read aloud by someone. So a better way to say that sentence would be:
As you read the text, practice your listening as it is read aloud.Does this make more sense?

A I think what you were trying to say was that you had spent time in studying English but your English was still very poor.

Perhaps you can tell me how you study. Sometimes the way people study is not very effective. So you spend time and energy but don't get the results. It is like spinning your wheels but going nowhere. ("Spinning one's wheels" is a saying that describes unfruitful activities.)

Eternity in Their Hearts
Q Dear John Doe, I was an English High School teacher in Macao before. I did not know Chinese at that time. I could not communicate with my students. Then I read a book about Ancient Chinese Characters proved that the ancestors of the Chinese knew God the Creator long before the Hebrew Bible was ever written. Words like "Shangdi" "zao"(to create), yuan(garden), jin (to prohibit), lan(to covet), fa (punishment), xiong(elder brother), xiong(cruel/murder), mogui(tempting devil), hong(flood),chuan(boat), and many others especially in the Jia Gu Wen, all show how the inventors of the first Chinese written scripts knew the story of the Bible exactly as recorded in Genesis 1 through 10. Do you know about this? Can you explain to me further? Thanks. God bless you.

A Hi, Sammy,
Yes, I have heard about that book. I haven't read it myself, but I think it will be fascinating to read.

Herbal or Coffinated
Q Mr John Doe, In a coffee shop in west coast in America, when I order a cup of tea, and the coffee maker asks me like this: Herbal or coffeinated?
I don't know what it means "Herbal or coffinated?" Please explain this question, thank you.
A Hi, Ng Yiok,
There are two kinds of tea: those that contain caffeine and those that don't. Those with caffeine is described as "caffeinated", and those without usually are herbal teas made from flower or plants that don't contain caffeine. Some coffee-drinkers like to drink coffee without caffeine also. Generally that kind of coffee is called "decaf" - short for decaffeinated.

Mother's Day
Q Mr John Doe,
Your materials are suitable for me. It is not too hard nor too easy, it is exactly what I need. Thank you very much. Mother's day is upcoming, would you tell us when and how Mother's Day begin? And what do most Americans do on Mother's Day?
A Hi, Yu Jue,
Thank you for your nice comment!

Mother's Day in North America is usually the day when the husband and children will let the mother in the family have a break from her house work. They may cook breakfast for their mother to eat, give her a present, and take her out for lunch.

Then maybe they will do something together with the mother - something that she enjoys, like shopping! Then for dinner the whole family may go to the grandmother's house and take her out for dinner.

By the way, the husband will generally give a gift or some flowers to his wife too (as a token of thanks to her as the mother of his children).

Fastest Way to Learn English
Q John Doe 老师,您好我在外贸公司学做外贸可是我不会英语很苦恼,请问我要用什么方式已最快的速度学好英语呢?
A Hi, 沉静,
There is a fastest way that I know of, but you may not be able to do it. It requires you to live in an environment that is totally English-speaking. It is called total immersion.

So if you cannot do that, then the second best will be to spend as much time as possible reading, hearing, writing and speaking English.

Starting with the Basics; Pen Friends
Q 您好,John Doe 老师,去年考研失败,败在了外语上,听力很差,令我耿耿于怀。决定从头再来,我想从最基础的学起,您能交我一些方法吗?另外,我想如果我能有个外国朋友就好了,您能介绍一下吗?
A Hi, 小雨,
Most English learners find listening comprehension difficult. So you are not alone.

It is a good idea to rebuild your foundation. In order for me to know how to advise you, perhaps you can take the quizzes that we have and let me know your score (on at least three quizzes, and let me know which questions you missed) - if you would like, I can keep your score confidential.

We would like to introduce penfriends for those who really want to improve their English - those who participate here often. Would you be interested in that? There will be requirements because it is not easy for us to find such penfriends.

I am an English lover. I can writing in English freely. and I work in a foreign enterpirse, but always have the feeling of no subjet to talk when face the foreigner.

  • Where are you from?
  • Do you live in a big city or a small town?
  • How do you like China?
  • Is this the first time you have been here?
  • Do you travel a lot?
  • Do you enjoy traveling?

A Twist on a Familiar Quote
Q 请问: a twist on a familiar quote 是什么意思?谢谢!
A Hi, Anny,
A twist is a small change or difference that often changes the outcome.

For example, a familiar quote is "give him an inch and he takes a foot". "Give him an inch and he takes a mile" will be the quote with a twist because the change of one word changes the whole meaning - in this case, making it more drastic.

A Hi,小梅,
Perhaps you can get a book on business English. But I would also suggest that you collect all the forms you have to fill out and look up in a dictionary the words that you don't know, and write them all down in a notebook for learning English. Meaning of A Long Sentence
Q What's the meaning of the following sentance:
Chinese and American students will attend a graduate institution in China that is administered jointly by academic organizations that are worlds apart figuratively and literally.
Thanks a lot!
A Hi, Tiger,
This long sentence should have been broken up into two sentences for clarity: Chinese and American students will attend a graduate institution in China. The institution is administered jointly by academic organiations worlds apart both figuratively and literally.

In case you don't understand the second sentence, "worlds apart" means that they are very much different (hence "figuratively"), but since the organizations are in different parts of the world, they are hence also "worlds apart" literally.

Here are some examples of how "figuratively" is used:
1. He killed the goose that laid the golden eggs, figuratively speaking!
2. I'm going to finish the job even if it kills me - well, figuratively speaking! (It means that I will do all I possibly can to finish the job.)

Understanding English News
Q Hello,Mr.John, this is my first time to visit your website. So far I have been studying English for three years by myself, and has passed the CET4,and I've been working hard to improve my aural perception, but I find it too difficult to me to understand English news,it's too fast for me,and I can't hear it clearly. Thanks a lot.
Best wishes
A Hi, Tiger,
It is so good to hear from you. To study English by yourself and pass the CET4 is no small accomplishment! Congratulations! You are a good example and encouragement to others!

Listening to news on the radio is harder than watching the television. I think here are a couple of things that you can try:
1. record it so that you can listen more than once;
2. perhaps you are not familiar with some of the terms, places, or names used in the news, so maybe you can read more news in English to learn them. Then when you listen, you will be familiar with them. (When you are not listening to the news, can you follow? For example, when you listen to my answers without reading the text, can you understand?)

Muscles Chinese Don't have
Q hi ,John Doe:
do you think there is difference between chinese students and british or anmerican when they speak English ,esp at using their muscle?and i ofen think there is something in their mounths that do not exist in our chinese's ,am i right??
A Hi, Jacky,
That is an interesting thought, but I don't think that the British or Americans have muscles in their mouths that Chinese don't.

There is a difference only because English is the native language of British and Americans. I know many Chinese born in the U.S. who speak just like other Americans.

It is true, however, that there are sounds in English that are not in the Chinese language, and vice versa. So someone accustomed to making those sounds will make it seem easy compared to people who are not used to it. The same is true for western adults learning Chinese.

Difficulties in Improving Oral English
Q 老师,学习英语口语得不到提高的原因有哪些?
如何去解决这些问题?
A Hi, Sunny,
I believe the main hurdle for having difficuties in improving one's oral English skills is the need to translate. When you have to go through the step of translation both in listening and speaking, you cannot keep up.

Therefore I believe the goal is to get to a point where English becomes a reflex. For example, I say "dog" and you can immediately picture a dog rather than first translating it into Chinese.

Does that make sense? We hope to have resources made available for everyone to download that will help you get to that point.

That sounds like an interesting topic to write about. If it is an essay, there are a few different perspectives that you can write it from: someone who is learning, someone who is teaching, or someone who is an observer of people who are learning or teaching - like a reporter. Difficulty with Listening
Q Hello John
Could I ask you a question?I have a classmate who cannot catches up with the English class.I guess maybe she cannot even understand some basic sentences. She said if all the sentences are written out,she wouldn't have any difficulties. The point is how to reflect the words and sentences you hear successfully.
It is really kind of painful when in class everyone was communicating or receiving something with the teacher except you.I want to know if you have any advices.
Thank you very much!
yours truly
Rita
A Hi, Rita,
It is nice that you would like to help your friend.

If she has no problem when the sentences are written out, it probably means that she finds it too fast and cannot keep up. Is that the case? If you talk to her very slowly, can she understand?

A Hi,Carmen,
Yes, when you don't use it, you lose it!

I think you need to keep up both the oral and the written. For oral, a good way is to listen to radio or watch English TV. And then reading will be important to keep up your comprehension skills. You should also write regularly - diary, letters, or even stories.

CET4
Q 老师,你好
我现在很想过4级,但是英语基础很差,你能帮我说一说过4级最重要的是什么吗。 谢谢!
A Hi, 实弓,
I assume that you are talking about CET4. CET4 is quite a comprehensive examination on English usage. It seems that much of it is based on North American English and culture. It is hard to say what is most important. I can say that the Listening Comprehesion is probably the hardest for Chinese students.

A Hi, Huwei,
Practice more! Practice listening as you read the text being read, and then try to listen to the same passage without reading the text.
