A Hi, Maggie,
I am not quite sure about your English level just from what you said. It is not easy to learn English from just reading a dictionary. I would suggest that you look for opportunities to learn English through listening. And make good use of opportunities to practice - like here!

Improving Listening and Speaking Skills
Q It’s 21:56. I’m so glad to get your answer on my third question from Trans World Radio (www.ktwr.net). You thought if I can understand educational TV series, I should be ready to real TV. And the West Wing probably involves a lot of Americanism including jokes, slang, and culture. Hence it’s kind of misunderstanding to me. I can’t agree more. Thank you for encouraging me to write down some phrases or sentences while I’m watching each time. That’s very good to me. I’m gonna do that.
You thought that’s good to learn English one hour per day, and asked me what I did during the special time. To answer this question, I decided to keep writing journal every day. Would you mind if I show you one day?
You told me it depends on my goal and my environment to choose the appropriate English materials to learn.
I think my short goal is improving my listening and speaking skills. Especially understanding the West Wing.
To tell you the truth, I‘m an engineer, who’s working for a petrochemical company. During my work, I have a few chances to speak English with foreigner who comes from USA, UK, or somewhere else. Sometimes, it’s sort of hard to understand what they were saying, especially when they were talking among themselves. I think they must have used some slang. Obviously there are some cultural differences and I’m lack of vocabulary. In fact, we can’t find out the pronunciation of some petrochemical words in the dictionary. Although I said that I have enough materials to learn, I need some petrochemical materials with sound in deed.
It’s 23:30. I’ve got to hit the sack now. Thank you very much, john. Good night.

A Hi, Stone,
Thank you for your long message. Sorry that it has taken me so long to reply.

Keeping a journal is an excellent way of practicing English in general. But if your immediate goal is to improve your oral English, then learning more slang is probably something that will pay off faster - if you already have a foundation in English and can watch West Wing. Writing down and looking up some of the terms that you don't understand will be helpful.

As for the pronunication of petrochemical terms, I am not sure if I can help, but you can send me a few and I can give them a try.

Making Time to Practice
Q i am a teacher of a middle school, i spent most of my time in teaching, so i don't have much time to practice my hearing, So this is the main reason that i usually can't do it with my persistance! What should i do now?
A Hi, Leonardo,
Yes, when one has a full-time job, it makes it harder to find time for things. However, it is not impossible. Most people working in the office also don't have much time to practice listening, but they can do so on their way to and from work everyday. Do you have an mp3 player or a small cassette player that you can take along and listen to recordings on the bus or on the train? (I would not recommend listening while cycling though!)

Q DEAR JOHN,

In order to give you better advice, I would like to know your current English level. Can you describe it? Maybe you can take a few of the quizzes we have and let me know your score also.

A ready piece of advice that I can give you is to take advantage of any kind of opportunities you have to practice English. Asking questions here in English is one good way. (You don't need to feel embarrassed because everybody is learning here.) Another question I have for you is how much time are you willing to spend in practicing everyday or every week?

Q when I read magines ,i met many vocabulay those i can't understand.look them up in dictionary is impossible!what should i do?
A Hi, Wulin,
I think you meant that it would be impossible to look up all of the words that you did not understand in a magazine. In that case, I would suggest that you try to guess the meaning of them and only look up those that are interesting to you or important for understanding the gists of the articles. It is better to look up just a few words and learn them than to look up a lot and not being able to learn any!

The word "that" in your sentence refers to something that had been mentioned in the context - before this sentence. For example:

Here "that" refers to "she was ugly".

TV, Study Time
Q i've asked two questions before, and you, my respected teacher, had given me some impressive advice. just as you said,"my words of advice on learning english are all very practical." thanks for your straightforwardness.
as you asked me, i'd like to tell you something. firstly,i think my short-term goal is enjoying english TV series, such as "the west wing". i hope i can get the mean point when i watch it. actually, i've watched some educational TV series, such as "family album USA","look ahead" etc.. these are no big deal to me. but "the west wing" is very different. for me,it's kind of difficult to understand.
secondly,I'll try to make 1 hour spending on learning English everyday. is it sort of short?
finally, to tell you the truth, in my opinion, i have enough material to learn english. but sometimes i don't know how to take advantage of them.each one seems good to me, it's hard to make a good choice which one should be learned first.

how can i achieve my short-term goal of learning english? would you please give me some advice.

i really appreciate you take too much time to tell us so many good advice. good for you.

sincerely
stone lee
A Hi, Stone,
If you have no problems with educational TV series, I would say that you are ready for the real TV. Shows like West Wing may be difficult because they are very American. They probably involve a lot of "Americanism" including slang, jokes, and culture. So I would suggest that you write down a couple of phrases that you don't understand each time you watch it, and ask me about them here.

One hour a day is good, but could you tell me what you do during that hour?

As for knowing what material to use, it depends on your goal and your environment. If you are a student, then learning something more related to your schoolwork will be good. If you are working already, then material related to business or your work will be good. What is your short-term goal? To pass the CET4? To be able to converse with English speakers? Your course of study will depend on that.

New Learner
Q mrs john !excuese me ,please tell me i must master lots of vocabulary if i learn english first time
A Hi, Bear,
For a new learner, I think it is better not to try to learn a whole lot of new words because it is too hard and it will get discouraging. I believe in progressing in stages: learning just a few things well first before going on to the next. Are you a new learner? You know quite a few words already - like using the word "master" as a verb.

Mimic
Q Once I got into an English Voice Chatroom on line, the roomates keep quiet long, so I gave them a question to discuss, then one of them said," Rosa, your oral English is very good, you must have English speakers in your family."
Actually, there is not any people who is an English speaker in my family. How can I improve my oral English ?
The truth is: I keep mimicking Mr John Doe and Abby in "English Easy" program as well as Mr John Doe's answers with mp3. I am a mimic.
Now I have a question: "mimic" develops into "mimicked" and "mimicking", is it right?

Q JACK: Sounds like you've got a role-definition problem. You could replace one of them.

Mr John Doe, I don't understand "Not if" in above sentences, would you explain?
A Hi,Sandy,
The "not if" needs to be understood together with the sentence before it. So it really means: That is not an option if we're going to stay on budget and on schedule. The implied meaning is : "If we don't have to stay on budget or on schedule, then of course it is an option!"

See if you understand this one:
Jim: I am going to get sick!

"He's the COE's nephew. They sent him down to me for some hands-on experiences." I only know "some experience", but I don't understand the phrase "hands-on experience". Would you explaine it?
A Hi, Rosa,
Getting "hands-on experience" means that the person is actually doing something to learn how to do it. For example, to learn to be a carpenter, you cannot just watch someone use a hammer - you have to hammer a few nails and get some hands-on experience.

Passing CET-6 in 40 Days
Q How can I get through CET-6 in about 40 days?My english is very poor. But I want to get through it this time.
A Hi, Xiaofeiyang,
It really depends on how much time you can spend in these 40 days. It also depends on at what level is your English. But in general, since you probably cannot spend 8 hours a day to study English, it would be hard if your English is "very poor" as you described.

However, I don't think your English is very poor! Unlike some, you are not afraid to use it here. And all three sentences you wrote are without mistakes. So take courage! Is this the first time you are taking it? If not, what score did you get last time? (Another way of saying that is - but not specifically asking about the score: "How did you do last time?")

5, It is out of the question to help a patient die easily in the hospital.
5a, Keeping tiger in your apartment is out of the question.
Would you tell me what mistakes I made in my sentences?
A Hi, Yu Jue,
That is very good!

Here are the corrected sentences:
2. I told him to go to the Police Station but he didn't hear me. I thought the man's request was a tall order.
3a. It is embarrassing if you give your friend a phone call when she is in her sleep. It is not incorrect to use "in her sleep" here, but it is better to just use "asleep" or "sleeping".
4a. My uncle is a manager in the shop; he is on the spot.
5a. Keeping a tiger in your apartment is out of the question.

Explanation
Q Hi! Mr John Doe,
"In order for me to know how to advise you, perhaps you can take the quizzes." I don't understand the phrase "In order for me to know". Would you tell me its meaning? Thank you.
A Hi, Sandy,
Let me put it in another way:

Perhaps you can take the quizzes so that I know how to advise you.

Examining
Q 可以帮我分析和翻译一下这个句子吗?
In examining her facemore closey.
examining在这里的意思我不明白!
A Hi, xzwq2004,
The word "examine" can mean "study closely", or "look at closely, carefully".

e.g. 1. After examining the patient, the doctor concluded that she needed some stronger medicine.
2. The handwriting expert examined the signature on the contract.

Listening to English Radio Broadcast
Q Dear John Doe
i have a question for you.i have been listening to VOA or BBC,sometime the CNN for a long time ,but i could not understand all of them.i listened some of them extensively and others intensively, but it doesn't work.i think maybe the method is not in the right way.could you please tell me the better way of doing them?
A Hi, Dancingsea,
One thing that makes it harder to understand foreign broadcasts is that the material is not that familiar to you. They may talk about news happening in their country or topics you don't know much about. So without the text to follow, it is not easy especially they speak at a speed that is more suitable for native speakers.

So perhaps one way to do it would be to listen just to the news, but before listening, first read about the news items either on their website or elsewhere.
