Improving Oral English
Q Hi John Doe:
I'm a english leaner , but I don't have a good environment , I want to improve my oral english, how much time can I spend every ,and how to do ? Which is the best and fast way?
A Hi, Amy,
To improve your oral English, you need to listen more and speak more. Find some friends to practice with (look at the games section here for some ideas). To practice alone, read a passage aloud along with our recording at least a few times.

Going Blank in Front of Foreign Teacher
Q Hi,Mr John.I am an English major,so i have to improve my English in all aspects. Now,i nearly have spent one year in the univercity,i found my English still kept the same as before or even i have fogotten some grammers. What makes me annoyed is my oral English .When i talked with foreign teacher i felt i had nothing in my mind. What can i do ?Please hlep me!Thank you so much!
A Hi, Carina,
Forgetting English grammar is a problem if you are an English major. So my question is: are you reading enough English books and listening to enough English?

Your "going blank" (having nothing in your mind) in front of your foreign teacher is probably more a problem of nerves than a problem of English. You are just too nervous! You should take advantage of having a foreign teacher and talk with him/her as much as you can. Start with very simple conversations so that you get used to talking to him/her first.

Teaching Unwilling Students
Q I am a teacher to teach a simple English to the age of 15-19, they are unwilling to learn English but their lessons have to be learned. (They are belong to problem youngers in school). One big headache!!!!
A Hi, Jessica,
That sounds like a tough job! That has more to do with classroom discipline and motivation than just teaching English. Somehow you have to get them motivated to learn. I think positive reinforcement works better in the long term - in other words reward those who behave instead of paying more attention to those who misbehave (since they may misbehave to get attention).

Lack of English Environment
Q Can anyone who lacks of English environment learn English as well as,or even better than native speakers?
A Hi, Lin,
It will take more work to learn English without an English environment. But it is possible to write better than native speakers because often times the way they speak is not proper and sometimes grammatically wrong or they use the wrong words.

However, without an English environment, to speak English better than native speakers (in terms of fluency) will be difficult. But then the purpose of speaking English well is not to compete with people but to communicate with them.

No Environment to Practice English
Q hi,John,it's the first time for me to be this web.station. i have little chance to communicate with others in english, maybe that's why i can't speak english fluently.
A Hi, harriet,
Not having the environment to communicate in English with others does make it hard to practice. In that case in addition to listening to English mp3, or on line, or radio/TV/movies, you can also create the environment: gather with a few friends very week to practice English by discussing a topic or share about something (a preset topic). Limit each person to 3 or 5 minutes. Then the others can ask questions (in English).

Schools for younger kids in the west often have a "show and tell" time in which a student would bring something to school and share about it in front of the class. What do you think?

Improving Spoken English
Q hi, John.i am amy. i have so many questions to ask u about English. Q1: how can i do to improve my spoken English more. i used to learn it by reciting the vocabulary and the sentence. but it is useless.Q2: My written English is ok, but i can not do it(spoken English) as written English.
pls tell me how to do it well. and please point out the text which the grammer is wrong.
Tks. all wish to u.
A Hi, amy,
1. Reciting words and their definitions in a dictionary probably does not help a whole lot. It is better to read and then look up words you don't know and then write them down in a notebook for review later. (See my suggestions.)
2. If you want to improve your oral English, you must listen more and speak more. You can practice with others by playing some games (see http://www.abc111.net/games/oral_game_GuessObjG.shtml).

Corrections on what you wrote:
1. How can I improve my spoken English further? Or, you can say, "What can I do to improve my spoken English further?"
2. To do it properly, all "i"s should be capitalized, and the first letter of the first word of all sentences shold be capitalized.
3. My written English is ok, but I cannot speak in English as well as I can write in it.

Overall, you are doing not bad. Keep at it, you will do better and better!

Understanding a Sentence
Q Dear John,

Could I ask you a English question here?
I am reading an article and could not understand the following sentence even though I know every word in that sentence.
The sentence: "Is something about your personality, behavior, or the way you come across to others getting in the way of meeting people?"
What does it mean?
What could I do to find the answer for this similar situation?
Thanks a lot if you could reply me!
A Hi, May
Perhaps you have difficulty in understanding some of the phrases.

"The way you come cross to others" - means how people perceive you, how your words and actions are interpreted by others.

"Getting in the way of" - becoming a hindrance or barrier.

If you run into similar difficulties in future, perhaps you should look it up in a dictionary that has explanation to phrasal verbs.

Who vs Whom
Q difference btw. who and whom
A Hi, lee,
"Who" is used when a subject is normally used.

e.g. He is the one who likes chocolates. (In the clause "who likes chocolates", "who" is in the subject position.)

He is a vicious criminal to whom no mercy should be given. (In this case, the word "whom" is the object of the clause "no mercy should be given.")

Learning New Words
Q I want to lean English, but I don't know how to remember new words.plese give me a way.
A Hi, xiao huan,
It is best to learn new words in context. Hence it is better to learn them from reading or listening. Take a look at my suggestion on the page about building one's vocabulary: http://www.abc111.net/forum/JDcornerG_imprvVocab.shtml.

One thing that I would add: if you want to remember the new words, in addition to reviewing them, you need to use them in writing new sentences.

Courage to Speak
Q Hi John:
我想和我的外教说英语,但是我又害怕呀.因为我已经失败了好几次。我又害怕,我的写作还可以但是口语就不行呀!我应该怎样练习口语呀?谢谢
A Hi, sweet,
I am glad that you had at least tried to speak English with your foreign teacher. You are more fortunate that many others who don't have that opportunity.

You said that you had failed a few times. What do you mean? Did you make a mistake when speaking to your teacher? That is no reason to give up. You are learning English. Anyone learning something will make mistakes. Otherwise you don't have to learn! I would encourage you to set the goal to speak with your foreign teacher - not to be perfect and not make mistakes, but just to speak. That is the best first goal to shoot for. I am looking forward to hear from you that you have succeeded in achieving that goal (but your teacher may not be around now since it is summer now).

Practicing Listening
Q 老师好!
在刚开始训练英语听力的时候,到底该如何应用书面文字,有人说千万别看书面文字,要全部听出来!!你认为这样的方法可取吗?
谢谢
A Hi, hmily,
If you are just starting out training yourself in listening, you should choose something that suits your level. Listen to it first without looking at the text. If you can understand some of it, that is good. If you cannot keep up after the first sentence. Listen a few times while you read. Then try to listen without reading the text. This will help training you to understand.

Thinking in English
Q 当我试着用英语思考时,太多句子翻译不来使我很苦恼.但是如果你翻译出来,我又会觉得,啊.好简单!而且翻译时我翻译错了也没人给我指证.唉.
when i try to think in english,it makes me so paintful and hateful that there are often a plenty of sentences i cann't translate them into english.what shall i do?how to deal with?could u do me a favor?thank u so much.
A Hi, cherry,
Actually, it is hard to force yourself to think in English. To be able to think in English means that when someone speaks in English, you don't have to translate in your head before understanding what the person is saying. It is something that becomes natural after you become better and better in your listening skills.

So I would suggest that you focus on improving your listening rather than trying to "think in English".

Singular or Plural?
Q
Ever boy and ever girl___the right to receive education.A.have B.has.
Each boy and each girl____to help.A.is asked B,are asked.Which is right ,why?

A Hi, 王尧世,Here is the answer from the expert that I consulted:

Every boy and every girl has the right to receive education.

The verb 'has' must be singular, because you are talking about 'each' one, not a group. If you read the sentence like this: "Every one _____ the right…." then it becomes clear that the verb which you insert must be singular. "Have" is a verb you use when you describe a group, i.e. "Children have the right…"

Each boy and each girl is asked to help.

Again, this relates to plural and singular usage. If the sentence was "Boys and girls __________ to help" – you would use 'are asked' because you are referring to a group. The fact that it is singular – you are talking about 'each' boy and girl, not the group of boys and girls, means you use the singular verb 'is'. You can shorten is again, and find your answer more easily by changing the sentence like this: "Each one is asked to help."

Don't worry, these are confusing points of grammar in which even native English speakers often make mistakes!

Listening Skills
Q Hi,John.I'm a student of English major. All the time,I find I can catch English spoken by Chinese teacher, but not that easy to catch a native speaker. What shall I do?Beside, can you tellme something about 节奏 and 语调?I think it is very important, but English learner here pay little attention to it.Thank you for advice.
A Hi, OLiver,
There are a few different reasons for your not being able to understand English spoken by native speakers though you can understand a Chinese teacher. One reason could be that your teacher speaks slower and more precisely while native speakers tend to speak faster and slur words together more.

Intonations and inflections are not as easy to learn because one needs to listen to a lot of native speakers before becoming familiar with them. You can learn the basics from some general rules (for example, where the emphasis is placed on a particular word in a sentence), but beyond that, it is best to learn it in context so that you know when something is said in a certain way, you can tell the feelings communicated with it. For example, I can say, "You'd better go right now!" And I can say "You'd better go right now." The first one communicates urgency, while the second one is just very casual.

Phrasing is bit easier because you can learn the proper phrasing from the sentence structure (unless when it comes to idioms). A sentence can usually be broken up into phrases and clauses, and that is how you would say it, putting in the pauses after phrases and clauses.

2. I want my car to sell.
3. I want my card sold. (same meaning as 1)

It is hard for me to know exactly why you have not been able to get the right answers in "the fill in the blanks" section in examinations. You will need to analyse that yourself. Complicated Sentences
Q 我是一名大学生,在英语学习方面听力是我的弱项,我总听不懂一些复杂的句子,英语广播更是太难了,亲爱的老师,你能给我一些具体的意见吗?
A Hi,东东,
First I need to ask you if you have difficulty understanding complicated sentences in reading. Both in reading and listening, there are words and phrases to look for in order to understand better. For example, the word "because" links a reason with an event or fact. e.g. He is hungry because he has not eaten for three days. The phrase "so that" often links a purpose with an action. e.g. I have turned off my phone so that when it rings, it will not disturb others.

Your difficulty in listening to English broadcast may be more than just not being able to understand complicated sentences. The speed usually is a problem.

"Except" and "Except For"
Q Hi, would you be so kind to tell me the difference between "except" and "except for"?
A Hi, sophia,
Good question!

Sometimes you can use either, especially after using generalizing words like "all", "every", "no", "whole", etc.

e.g.
1. He drank it all except one little drop.
He drank it all except for one little drop.
2. No one likes that cat except its owner.
No one likes that cat except for its owner.

Before prepositions and conjunctions, use "except":
e.g. 1. He doesn't smile except when his picture is taken.
2. Milk is expensive everywhere except in small towns.

Q Dear John; i am glad to wirte to you .i am an English teacher.i want to improve my listening english .i have difficulty in listening voa or bbc news. i want to improve it .my writing english is not good ,too. can you tell me how to improve ?
A Hi, lida,
Not having the environment is one major hurdle in improving one's listening skills when learning English. So the more you can put yourself in such an environment, the faster you can improve.

I know this is easier said than done. But you can create a pseudo English environment for yourself by listening to English whenever you have time. I would suggest that at the beginning, you should listen to the same thing over and over so that it is very familiar with it. But it is important to listen to something at a speed that you can follow. Our mp3 files here are great for that.

If you have trouble listening to VOA or BBC news (TV or radio?), either the speed is too fast for you, or there are too many words that you don't know. Can you tell me which one is the case?

To improve your writing, you need to pay attention to details. Something that may seem minor to a Chinese person may not be so to a westerner. For example, the first word of a sentence should always be capitalized. One thing that will help is to read books to yourself aloud so that hearing it will reinforce your memory.

Listening Comprehension
Q Hello !I am very happy that I can express myself . Yes.I have some trouble in listening comprehenlish.Espealishly when I listen BBC and VOA.I have tried some ways in it .But I do not why .Thank you tell me what I should do . Thank you !!
A Hi, lihui,
BBC and VOA English may be a bit too fast for you, or maybe the vocabulary is a bit too hard. If that is the case, start with something easier. Learning English is like learning how to swim: you don't want to swim across the Bohai Strait when you are still learning how to breath!

Afraid of Speaking to Foreigners
Q HI John i am a sales staff ,i have worked since 2000. i like ur net very much and come here often.sometimes i dont know my gramar righy or not and little of vocabulary ,i am afraid to speak to foreigner if i have a chance.
A Hi, bob,
I am glad that you have written here in English. This is a good place to practice.

The biggest hurdle in improving your speaking skills is the lack of practice. And you don't need to be afraid of speaking to westerners - their Chinese may not be better than your English! You don't have to be perfect.

Practicing Listening
Q 老师您好!在训练听力时,是要看材料听,还是不看材料听?如果不看的话,怎么也听不懂?老师您说我该怎么办?
A Hi,大器晚成,
How many times do you listen while you read? I would suggest that you do it a few more times so that even when you are not reading it, you can understand what is being said.

A Hi, Flora,
I am not quite sure what your friends meant when they told you that you would need to use "English thinking way to study". But one thing I know: you will need to think through things rather than just regurgitating what your teachers tell you.

Choosing a Movie to Watch for Learning English
Q 我是一名英语专业的学生,可我对我的口水平很不满意,不是发音问题,而是如何能够地道的表达你想所表达的东西,中国的很多教材都太书面话,市面上的确有很多口语的教程,实在太多让我应接不暇,能否推荐一本具有权威性的.而且,我喜欢看电影学口语,可是我的同学告诉我不是什么电影都要看,是需要有选择性的,应当如何选择呢?
A Sorry, I have not done any research in that area (books and curricula for learning oral English). As for learning English from watching movies, I agree that it is very useful. These are some of the things that I think a student can be mindful of when choosing a movie:

1. accent - sometimes the setting of a movie is such that a non-English accent is required. It will be harder for learners to understand the dialogues.
2. time period setting - some movies may be set 150 years ago and hence may use phrases that are not as common nowadays.
3. vulgarity - some movies use language considered vulgar, containing terms that many people consider offensive. So be careful what you are learning.
4. unhealthy content - some movies contain scenes and material that I don't want myself to be exposed to (e.g. nudity).

Native English Speakers
Q 你好,我想问一下,在没有钱的情况下,希望找一个母语是英语的老师的话有没有可能?我现在是学生,没有收入,但非常想提高自己的口语水平。
A Hi,11,
I can see your difficulty. It is harder to practice "oral" when there is not a native English speaker to talk with. However, it is not totally impossible. We have been working on getting some material for visitors here to use for practicing and we hope to have it available soon. But my first suggestion will be to meet with a friend to practice together.

Another way to practice is for a group of students to memorize a drama or a play together, each taking one role. If you like, you can use the "A Christmas to Remember" drama script that we have here. It only takes a small group of 4 people to do it (six will be better, but two people have very few lines to say). Write me back if you would like more directions on how to get started on that.

Remembering English Words
Q Learn enlish is every harn Ithink. It is not eary for me to remember the enlish word! Mang time Ihave many questions 我的发音 是很不好!now how i can learn it??
A I think the first thing will be to try to remember the sound of each letter, and all the sounds in a word.

For example, the letter M makes a word sound like "ma" (mother in Chinese). A word with the letter G usually has the sound "ga". So in the word English, it has the "ga" sound in the middle.

So I think you need to first listen more carefully.

BBC News
Q Dear John,
I find that it is quite difficult to listen to the BBC news as ther are many new jargons and news. I always find it not easy to comprehend the content as I have to be very attentive. This makes me feel frustrated.

Cheers,
Tim
A It is normal that you have to concentrate when you listen to the BBC. After all if English is not your mother tongue, it takes time to digest what you are hearing, especially when there are new terms that you don't understand.

There Be
Q 你好,我想问一下那里可以找到there be 句形的应用,谢谢!
A Hi, 小郭,
Here are a few examples:

1. Will there be any food left?
2. Should there be any money left?
3. Will there be teachers to help us?

So as you can see, the "be" is part of the "should be" or "will be", etc. It is just "broken up" into two parts by "there".

A Hi, 胡纯益+,
Digging a well when you are already thirsty usually cannot help your thrist in time. If you really want to improve your English, make plans now to spend a certain number of hours a week or even everyday practicing it.
