How to Improve Your Listening Skills
Q I have a telephone interview today. I regret I could not understand a word! I am very depressed!

A Hi, zjb3617,
I'm so sorry to hear that! Your written English seems quite good. Perhaps it was the accent of the speaker as much as the content or vocabulary. What kind of job are you looking for?

How to Expand Your Vocabulary
Q what is th e definition of generation gap?

A Hi, kevin,
A generation gap is a difference in attitudes and values between two generations, making it hard for them to understand each other. Whether with our parents or our children, more listening, spending time together and patience are the way to bridge the generation gap.

How to Expand Your Vocabulary
Q John老师:
您好!请问一下这个句子用英语怎么说“上次课我们学习了以下内容”,尤其是“上次课”的英文说法,我上网查了一下有点乱。谢谢!

A Hi, ganhong,
There is more than one way to say it. One way would be: "We studied the following contents in the last lesson." The key in translating is to try to pick up the main meanings and not translate word for word.

How to Improve Your Oral Skills
Q 老师你好,i am stay in affrican.when i want to talk with them ,but sometimes l don't understand, can you help me how to inprove it,thankyou

A Hi, 朱腾飞,
Are you studying or working in Africa? What a special experience. Many Africans can speak English, but their accent is probably different from yours. You can ask people to repeat something slowly, and talk often with them. I hope you will enjoy getting to know Africans.

How to Improve Your English
Q 我是一名大三的学生,我想在大学最后的时间里,尽自己最大限度去提高我的英语口语,英语翻译和英语写作水平。Could you give me some useful advice? Thanks a lot.

A Hi, Sherri*Young,
English speaking and writing, and translation, are different skills. With speaking, you need to practice expressing yourself in English, paying attention to the content and to pronunciation and intonation. With writing, you need to have a firm grasp of grammar, use of vocabulary and writing styles. Translation requires good reading as well as writing skills in both languages.

A Hi, Jimmy,
I can see that you are really making an effort in improving your English listening. Apart from short online recordings, you can also try to find radio or TV programs, or audiobooks which are CD recordings of books read aloud.

How to Improve Your English
Q How to study everyday,I always choose to do something else, what should I do ?

A Hi, vicky,
Yours is a common problem for students of any age! It's a matter of self-discipline and perseverance. You can try to make your studying fun, with several short sessions rather than one very long one. Allow me to ask you: why do you want to learn English? How important is it for you?

How to Improve Your Oral Skills
Q Hi,John Doe.
I am a English learner who engaged to improve oral Enlish.
What makes me worried is that I can only find Chinese in English chatting room. What could I do?How to find foreigners to chat with me?

A Hi, liuhongcan,
I understand that it's not easy to find native English speakers to talk with, whether in a chat room or in person. Do you have a friend who is also serious about improving his or her oral skills? The two, or more, of you can meet together regularly and talk only in English. You can talk about yourselves or any subject that interests you, or you can do an activity together but still speaking only English.

How to Improve Your English
Q The second book was _____ by August 1952, but two years latter, the end was still nowhere in sight.
A.completed B.to have completed C.to complete D.to have been completed

Which is the best answer? A or D? Why?
(The Key is D, but I can't understand why A is wrong)

A Hi, Kelly,
It's good that you are practicing English grammar. Both answers, A and D, are grammatically correct for the first phrase in the sentence, so we have to look at the context to decide on the right answer. The answer D, 'to have been completed', means that the book was 'planned to be completed' by August 1952, whereas the answer A, 'completed', means that the book was completed some time in the past. Since it says 'two years later, the end was still nowhere in sight', we conclude that D must be the correct answer.

How to Improve Your English
Q Hi,John
I have a little trouble: I spend a lot of time on learning English, but I still have bad marks.
Can you tell me why?

A Hi, Kelly/Moai,
I'm sorry that your grades were not as you hoped. It's great to hear that you devote a lot of time to learning English. Are you improving in all aspects of your English: listening, speaking, reading and writing? You need to build up your vocabulary and sentence structure too, which will help in all these areas. Try different ways of learning, such as listening to recordings on this website, watch films in English, read English books, etc.
