The Best Friend in Life

Act I

[Paul and Tiffany arguing.]

Paul:

[Angrily.] Why'd you do this again? "Correcting" my paper without asking me first.

Tiffany:

Are you actually complaining? I'm doing you a favor! You didn't see any of the grammar mistakes and bad writing? You should be thankful!

Paul:

Thankful? Maybe you should learn “respect” first!

Tiffany:

Hey, I was just trying to help!

Paul:

Help? It's called disrespect.

Tiffany:

[In high pitch.] Disrespect? Don't you ever appreciate what I do for you?

[Tiffany starts crying.]

Paul:

I've had it; crying isn't going to do you any good this time. I'm leaving. This is too much, Tiffany.

[Paul slams the door and walks out. Grace enters. Tiffany's still crying.]

Grace:

[Joyfully.] Hey, Paul!
[To Tiffany.] What's going on? Paul looks so mad.
[Finding Tiffany crying, Grace tenderly asks her what has happened.]
Tiffany? Is, everything alright?

Tiffany:

[Crying.] No, I am not alright; not at all.

Grace:

Oh, dear. Tell me, what happened?

Tiffany:

[Sobbing.] Paul's angry because I made a few changes on his paper without asking him first. But I was just trying to help!

Grace:

I am sure you were. But why didn't you ask him first? You guys have argued over this before, right?

Tiffany:

I know I should have asked him. But I am worried about him. He's always procrastinating, doing his homework just a few days right before it's due. I don't know if you've noticed the dark circles under his eyes. He's been staying up for almost one week! I've told him over and over again not to do that. But he never listens.

Grace:

What is this assignment about? It seems quite difficult and challenging.

Tiffany:

Introduction to Shakespeare.

Grace:

Wow. It must be tough. I don't think I can handle it.

Tiffany:

You and Paul are different cases. You are a math major, but he's an English major. He surely knows it's not an easy subject and should have spent more time on it.

Grace:

Paul's lucky to have an intellectual girlfriend. And I think you really care about him, don't you?

Tiffany:

Of course I do. I am so worried about his health. This assignment really seems to be wearing him out. I was trying to make it easier for him.

Grace:

I understand; this is just how you demonstrate your support and concern. I think Paul knows you were trying to help him, too.

Tiffany:

Does he? But look at his reaction! He's not thankful at all! [Start crying again.]

Grace:

Oh, sweetie. Let me get you some tissues. [Tiffany takes a tissue and blows her nose.] But I think maybe what Paul wants is compassion you know? Not to have people care so much about his performance or to be treated like a little boy.

Tiffany:

That's not what I meant. Besides, I was being compassionate. Otherwise, I wouldn't have spent time changing his paper.

Grace:

Well, let me put it this way. If you were Paul, or if you are really worn out, what would you want him to do for you?

Tiffany:

Hm... Make me a cup of tea, a hug, some comforting words; as far as I am concerned, those things show that he knows what I'm going through and that he cares.

Grace:

Exactly. So my point is, taking his feeling into consideration.

Tiffany:

[Slowly, thinking.] But He always says he's ok when he's obviously not ok. I don't know how to get him to tell me how he feels, either. So frustrating...

Grace:

But be patient, Tiffany. It usually takes more time to have boys tell you how they feel. They don't talk like girls.

Tiffany:

[Thinking; speak slowly.] That's true… Sometimes I really don't know what Paul thinks or wants...

[To be continued.]
