The Best Friend in Life

Act IV

Steve:

[Talking on the phone.] Hey, Grace. Got a minute?

Grace:

Yeah, what's up?

Steve:

Well, I'd like to pray for Paul and Tiffany with you.

Grace:

Paul and Tiffany? Oh, sure. How about four in the afternoon? I am still busy with my assignment.

Steve:

Sure. I'll meet you in the cafe.

Narrator: Three days have passed. It seems that nothing has changed between Paul and Tiffany. Both of them remain sad for what's happened yet don't know how to communicate with each other again. Steve is a bit discouraged when Paul refused to pray with him. But he does not give up on his friend, neither does he overlook the power of prayers. Instead of "forcing" Paul to believe what he believes in, Steve invites Grace to pray with him for Paul and Tiffany. He knows God delights in intercession prayers.

Grace:

Still disappointed about Paul's refusal?

Steve:

Yeah, a bit. But I can't force him, you know. How about Tiffany? Is she feeling better?

Grace:

I think so. I saw her the other day and she didn't seem as sad. She didn't talk about Paul, though.

Steve:

Hum… You worry about her?

Grace:

Well, I've done what I could. I am thankful that we prayed together. God has his way to work things out.

Steve:

I wish Paul could experience what we've experienced, too. Just give God and himself a chance...

Grace:

Don't worry. We are here to pray, not to mourn over our disappointment. Besides, [jokingly] you used to be a skeptic.

Steve:

Ha, you still remember that? Anyway, let's pray for them. And maybe we can go for a walk later, it's a beautiful afternoon.

Grace:

Sure.

Narrator: Paul walks in the café without seeing Steve and Grace. He sits by the window and orders a black coffee. He keeps thinking about the "magic power" about prayers: Does it really work? How does it make amends for a relationship that is falling apart? Why would Steve trust in Jesus? Who is Jesus, anyway? In doubts, Paul takes out his notebook and starts "praying" with his pen.

Paul:

To the God above— Steve told me that you are his best friend. Whenever he talks to you, you listen with understanding and love. What's even stunning to me is that, Steve said you comfort him and help him solve problems as long as he lets go and has you take over. I don't know how this works. But now, I really don't know how to make things work between Tiffany and me. So I'd like to give myself a chance to experience what Steve was talking about, this intimate, personal relationship with you. Although somehow I feel like murmuring here. You know things don't go well between my girlfriend Tiffany and me. This time, it's serious. I must have hurt her though I also feel like a victim. I don't know if Tiffany and I will ever continue this relationship, but I do want to make peace with her and say "I am sorry for slamming the door." If you will, just...give me a chance to communicate with her without feeling embarrassed or losing my pride. Appropriate manner and attitude; these two things I pray for myself. Well, I guess that's all for now. Bless you, uh..., I mean, bless me. in..., who? Oh right, Jesus, in Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

Tiffany:

[Cheerfully.] Hey, Grace. Hi, Steve! What a coincidence! How have you been?

Paul:

[To himself.] No way! You've got to be kidding me.

[To be continued.]
