The Best Friend in Life

Act V

Paul:

Hi, Tiffany.

Tiffany:

Oh, Paul.
[Pause. A bit awkward in tone.]

Paul:

[Trying to calm himself down.]
So, how have you been?

Tiffany:

Uh..., I am alright. You?

Paul:

Well, same here.
[Silent.]

Grace:

Hi, Paul! When did you come here? Steve and I didn't see you come in.

Paul:

You two are here? I didn't see you guys, either. Well, I am just here to...uh...

Steve:

Have some coffee?

Paul:

Yeah! Coffee. The weather is good today.

Grace:

It sure is, isn't it?

Paul:

You and Steve here for tea time?

Grace:

Yeah. It's been a while since we our last afternoon time. We were just praying, by the way.

Paul:

Hum...

Steve:

Are you ok? You seem a bit surprised to see us.

Paul:

Uh...

Grace:

Well, Steve, why don't we go to the park?

Steve:

Oh, yeah. Let's...

Paul:

Wait, Steve. I want to... say sorry.

Steve:

Sorry? For what?

Paul:

For teasing Jesus.

Steve:

Teasing Jesus? Ha, that's ok. I am sure Jesus is very used to that.

Paul:

And I am sorry for making you feel uncomfortable. I shouldn't have said that you were preaching.

Steve:

That's ok. Grace says I sound like a preacher, too.
[Grace and Tiffany burst out laughing.]

Paul:

And Tiffany?

Tiffany:

Yes?

Paul:

I am sorry for slamming the door. It was rude.

Tiffany:

It was. But I am sorry, too. I shouldn't have corrected your paper without asking you first.

Paul:

I know you didn't mean it. You were just trying to help.

Steve:

Grace, shall we?

Grace:

Sure.

Paul:

You seem much better. I'm glad.

Tiffany:

I'm glad, too. How have you been?

Paul:

To be honest, not very well. But I've been thinking a lot.

Tiffany:

Like what?

Paul:

Like what happened between us; how Jesus works things out.

Tiffany:

I've been thinking a lot, too. It's interesting, isn't it? Not the argument, of course. I don't think Jesus is just a historical figure; perhaps he really does live among us.

Paul:

[Pause.]
You know what, I am surprised to see you here. Actually, shocked!

Tiffany:

Why? I come here quite often.

Paul:

I know. But I was just praying for a chance to say sorry to you.

Tiffany:

You were praying? Wow!

Paul:

I smell sarcasm here, Tiffany.

Tiffany:

Ha, sorry. Go on.

Paul:

This Jesus, he really listens and answers, doesn't he?

Tiffany:

I think he does.

Paul:

He's...cool.

Tiffany:

Yeah, he is. I've been praying, too. After Grace prayed for me, I tried to pray, too.

Paul:

Why?

Tiffany:

I think it's time for me to try something different. Maybe that's why you decided to pray, too. I've always wanted to do things on my own. I listened, but never take it seriously. But this time, I was at the end of the rope. I can correct your paper, but I can't change you. I myself need to be changed.

Paul:

What do you mean?

Tiffany:

To see your needs with a little humility.
