Molly was unusually quiet at church on the Sunday after the dinner disappointment with Sean. When Sara saw Molly after the worship service, she knew the dinner with Sean didn't go well. All of Molly's other friends sensed that something was wrong as well.

    "Are you okay?" one asked.

Before Molly could reply, Sara answered, "She's a bit under the weather." She put an arm around Molly and pulled her aside.

"The dinner with Sean didn't go well, huh?" asked Sara quietly.

Molly looked at Sara - a true friend who knew her so well and who was always by her side when she needed her - and shook her head, biting her lip to keep the tears in.

"I'm so sorry!" Sara gave Molly a big hug. "Do you want to talk about it?"

    "Maybe later."

"Okay. Do you still want to go visit the hospital today?" asked Sara, referring to their monthly visit, as volunteers, to the children cancer ward planned for that afternoon.

Molly took a deep breath and said, "I don't really feel like going, but one of the boys will be operated on today, and I told him I would go see him before he went in. I've got to go."

"Okay," Sara looked at Molly and nodded.

When they got to the hospital, Molly and Sara each put on a white gown and surgical mask as required by the hospital. Sara needed to go to the restroom, so Molly went on ahead. Just as she was passing in front of a room in the Intensive Care Unit, a woman rushed out.

"Excuse me. Come take a look. His heart is racing!" the woman grabbed Molly by the hand and half dragged her in.

"Sorry, I... I don't work here," Molly tried to explain.

    41: 手术 The Procedure

As Pearl waited, she started thinking about the baby she was carrying. She had always wanted to have children. She wondered what her baby would look like. "Is it a boy or a girl? Will she look like me?" At that point, she couldn't help it any longer. As she stared at the hallway in front of her, tears ran down her face. She could not help thinking how the baby was part of her. It was her son, her daughter, but she was ending its life.

"But I must do it. I have no choice!" in her mind she argued with herself. "I did not mean to bring it to this world." Then she remembered what Elvie had said one time.

Pearl and Elvie had been walking by the small river near their neighborhood. Elvie was unusually quiet that day, and they walked farther and farther until they got to a quiet place that few people went. Suddenly Elvie said, "I wish I had not done that." Then she told Pearl how she regretted going to Betsy's place. She said she still thought about the baby all the time. "I'll never forgive myself" was the last thing she said.

As Pearl sat waiting for Betsy and as all these thoughts went through her mind, she felt her head would explode. She decided to just not think but to go through with it.

    At that moment, Betsy appeared.

Pearl followed her down the hallway into one of the rooms.

She kept her eyes tightly closed throughout the procedure. She did not want to see what was being done. After it was over, she got up slowly from the bed and walked toward the door. It was then that she noticed the bucket at the foot of the bed. Inside she saw a little hand. It was trembling.
