College Life Series

It Pays to be Respectful

Narrator: Sam and David are good friends and university roommates. They also work at the same coffee shop. One day, the two of them are getting ready to close the shop for the night, when an angry customer walks in, blaming them for something that wasn't their fault.

Sam:

Hey Dave, don't just stand there, get to work.

David:

Sorry, I was just thinking about a new pair of basketball shoes I want. They're fifty dollars, kind of expensive.

Sam:

Well, money doesn't grow on trees my friend. Hey can you make me a latte? I need to stay up late tonight to study.

Dave:

Sure thing.

Sam:

Thanks. I'll be right back. I'm going to grab something from the storage room.

David:

Hi there, what can I get you?

Woman:

[angrily] You can get me your manager.

David:

She's not on duty right now. Can I help you?

Woman:

This shop is garbage. I came here an hour ago and ordered a simple latte and you couldn't even prepare that correctly.

David:

An hour ago, that wasn't me, then.

Woman:

I don't care. You're the one behind the counter and so you need to take responsibility. The amount of milk is just too much and there is no flavour whatsoever.

Sam:

Ma'am what seems to be the problem?

Woman:

It's your guys' fault.

David:

[beginning to raise voice] Look, I don't know.

Sam:

[interrupts] I got it, Dave. Miss, what did you order? I'll make you another one, on the house.

Woman:

Were you even listening? I said I ordered a latte. Does no one here pay any attention to their customers?

Sam:

[calmly] Dave, give her that latte.

Woman:

I believe I should be compensated.

Sam:

Sure, no problem. How about a coupon, the next coffee you buy will be half-off.

Woman:

I suppose that will do. And my latte?

David:

[coldly] Here.

How can you do that?

Sam:

Hm? What do you mean?

How can you stay so nice and calm when she treats us like dirt? It wasn't even our fault. I mean, you're not even mad.

Sam:

[chuckles] Oh trust me, I'm not happy. Dave, sometimes though, you have to remember that people aren't always upset with you, but they'll take their anger out on you.

David:

Yeah, and that's not fair.

Sam:

No, it's not. But it doesn't help to get angry back at them. Don't fight fire with fire. Do you remember that one time, when you yelled at me for not washing the dishes?

David:

Yeah, I do. I just failed a test and felt horrible. Don't remind me.

Sam:

Right, and if I yelled back at you, we probably would have gotten into a real fight. We might not be friends now.

David:

You're probably right.

Sam:

Well, this is sort of the same thing.

Oh, she's back for round two. I'll handle it this time. Is there something else wrong, Miss?

Woman:

No. I just wanted to apologise for yelling at you two earlier.

Sam:

Don't worry about it, it happens.

Woman:

Also, this latte is great, perhaps the best I have ever had.

Sam:

Tell it to my co-worker Dave, he made it.

Woman:

Well, my thanks to Dave.

Dave:

Um...I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Woman:

Here's a little tip for my gratitude.

Sam:

Hey Dave, she gave us fifty dollars. Exactly.

Dave:

You serious?

Sam:

Absolutely. See what I mean? Even when people are rude to you, sometimes it pays to still be respectful to them. By the way, where's my latte?

David:

I gave yours to that lady. That's why it tasted so good.

Sam:

Oh. Smart. Can you make me another one?
